Morality drive forces Hollywood to sack sex
JACQUI GODDARD IN MIAMI - in Scostman.com News
HOLLYWOOD is staging a cover-up as public and political pressure for less sex and nudity prompts a shift towards more wholesome screen scenes.
Rustling bed-sheets and sighing temptresses are being faded out as film directors examine their consciences amid calls for a return to good old-fashioned morality and modesty.
Five years ago, 25 new releases were ranked "R" by film censors in the United States because of their high level of sexual content. But last year, there were just 18 - and in the past 12 months there have been only eight.
Hollywood’s diminishing appetite for sex is partly attributed to the influence of a more socially conservative government under George Bush, the president, and his attorney general, John Ashcroft, a member of the Pentecostal church noted for his moral certitude.
Paul Verhoeven, the director whose film Basic Instinct drew more attention for Sharon Stone’s risque leg-crossing scene than it did for the quality of its plot and acting, told Premiere magazine: "There’s a drip-down effect of this government’s position in the film industry, so you will see much more other things than nude scenes on your screen." He added: "What do you expect with Ashcroft who is an ultra-Christian puritan?"
Hollywood is finding that classic passion à la Gone with the Wind sells, whereas explicit love scenes, like those played by Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise in Stanley Kubrick’s last film, Eyes Wide Shut, are a turn off.
There is also a notable change in values among the film and television industry’s leading men and women, who are adopting a more demure approach as they get older.
Actresses still willing to take their clothes off only do so at a premium. Halle Berry famously levered an extra $500,000 from the makers of Swordfish before disrobing for a sexually explicit romp.
Others such as Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker and Sarah Michelle Gellar refuse point-blank to even consider steamy scenes, building no-nudity clauses into their contracts, while older stars such as Meryl Streep have made outspoken assaults on the industry for its past obsession with young nubiles at the expense of those with age and experience.
Cinema and television are also attracting a higher number of younger viewers these days, leading to an increasingly vocal lobby against sex in the media. A Gallup poll last month found that 67 per cent of people felt America’s moral standards were declining. Even Playboy magazine has announced it is to become more chaste in its approach.
The Parents Television Council, a non-partisan watchdog group, claimed in a survey released last month that the cumulative pressure on Hollywood is having an effect, finding that the major US television networks had shown a decrease in the sexual content of their programming by up to 75 per cent over the last four years.

"The most important things are the hardest things to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them - words shrink things that seemed limitless when they were in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while you were saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller, but for want of an understanding ear."
